The Osborne Property Group in conjunction with the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, are delighted to be appointed the preferred developer for the regeneration of Armagh Gaol by Armagh City and District Council.

Armagh Gaol, one of Northern Ireland’s most important historic buildings, is a landmark building within the City which makes a vital contribution to the townscape character of the Armagh Conservation Area. Built principally between 1780 and 1852, Armagh Gaol was largely designed by two of Ireland's most important architects, Francis Cooley and William Murray. The Gaol is Grade B+ listed and has lain vacant for the past 20 years since its closure in 1988 and is presently on the Built Heritage at Risk (BHARNI) list. In order to safeguard the long-term future of the buildings for future generations, it is necessary to identify sustainable and appropriate new uses for the Gaol.

The report on the outcomes of the event prepared by The Prince's Regeneration Trust sets out the agreed vision for the Gaol and identifies the next stages for its re-development. The report proposes a mixed-use scheme, including a high quality hotel and spa, restaurants, retail, heritage centre and residential development. This will preserve the historic buildings, create new jobs, deliver skills training, provide community facilities, promote cross-community ties, and encourage both tourists and local residents to visit and use the site.

The site is a flagship project of great importance to the City's continued growth over the next decade. The implementation of an appropriately sensitive, heritage-led regeneration scheme not only has the potential to create a hub of economic and social activity but may also act as a milestone and catalyst for further physical and economic regeneration schemes, underlining Armagh’s potential to become a key destination for both visitors and residents.
